Cheryl Forkner worked at an alternative high school in Arlington Washington for 9 years. She never talked to anyone about retirement and had no idea that she had earned a retirement during that time of her life. Cheryl left the high school and went into real estate.
40 years later Daniel Brewer from the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems called with some good news. He let Cheryl know that she was owed a pension. After Cherly recovered from the shock of the call she was informed that she would get a lump sum of $17,000 and a payment of $300 dollars every month for the rest of her life.
Cheryl isn’t alone. There are 450 other Cheryl’s that the Department of Retirement Systems is looking for. Daniel explains that many people don’t realize that they have earned or have forgotten and don’t know how to find out.
